floral graffiti?

Is there such a thing? Maybe….

Street art and graffiti are a source of continual inspiration to me. Since one of my main materials are single-use plastic shopping bags, I’ve been thinking about the lettering from logos and graphics on those bags. It occurred to me that if I cut the words apart, I’d have my own stash of letters which I can either use to compose ultimatums and ransom letters or I can make my own version of graffiti. So that’s where I began - my own graffiti - collaged letters, stitched by hand and/or machine, layered with repurposed translucent plastics.

As I worked with the words that I wanted to spell out, I came to the words that resonate with me now, today and everyday. Kindness. Goodwill. Concern. Service. Courtesy. Decency. Grace. Goodness. Humanity. Integrity. Dignity. Civility. Honesty.

Somehow this spring I also started thinking about flowers and plants and their meanings. It was a natural transition from there to layering words and flowers and their meanings. Magnolia blossom - perseverance, nobility. Thyme - courage, strength. Fern - sincerity, humility.

And that’s how these three new pieces came to fruition. Please excuse the photo quality, they haven’t been to a professional yet, waiting to get mounted on mat board first.
