Neogene, paleogene, anthropocene? πŸŒπŸŒŽπŸŒ

Have you heard that we're in the Anthropocene epoch? It's the new epoch in the geologic history of the planet named for human influence on the globe. The term hasn't yet been officially approved as a recognized subdivision of geological time, but the International Commission on Stratigraphy is working on it. Humans have done so much to change this planet that a new epoch term makes sense to me. I am looking forward to the US release of the film Anthropocene: The Human Epoch. The trailer is quite powerful, but I do hope that the film will also offer something hopeful for our planetary future.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the damage we humans have inflicted on our own home. It is all so complicated and multilayered. There are so many debates about it on both sides of the aisle, and each side has valid points. For myself, and for my art practice, I have come away with one definitive - litter is a main contributor to the damage that pollution is causing. And of course it is the one thing that I and everyone can help control. As someone I spoke to recently said - litter is a choice. A choice we make to be part of the problem or part of the solution.

So what does all this mean for my art practice? It means that I will steadfastly continue to make art from materials which would be polluting this planet if they're not disposed of properly. With recycling so full of loopholes and bureaucracy, making sure that plastic trash is properly disposed of is the one thing that I can advocate for and do something about. That's my pledge and I am sticking to it.

Below is a detail image of a proposal that I recently submitted for an exhibit. I planned to be utilizing single-use plastics and creating an immersive and participatory environment which would educate and hopefully delight. And I was delighted to be collaborating with another environmental artist for this, Kate Dodd. Unfortunately just yesterday we found out that our proposal was not accepted. But it is gratifying to know that we were in the final ten for consideration! That is a validation in itself! Now to find a new place to submit this or a similar proposal… got any suggestions?
