Virginia Spiegel is at it again! Raising money for the American Cancer Society. The link to Foto/Fiber fundraiser is on my side bar, and here's the link to Virginia's blog where she is profiling the studios of participating artists, including me today. Here are two sneak peeks at my fiber bonuses, the third is on Virginia's blog as well as pictures of my studio.

Tote Tuesday!

Tis time! as Virginia says: warm up your credit cards! The second Tote Tuesday is here, and this time my tote is up for grabs. Well, technically no tote, Virginia is providing the tote, I'm providing the contents. She's got all the info right here. And I'm just going to tease you with a few close ups of the luscious goodies that I have gathered to go into this tote. We've got dryer sheets ready to be painted, dyed or printed upon by you, and painted by me. We've got colorful plastics from my personal stash. We've got papers, tickets stubs and candy wrappers from last summer's trip to Russia. We've got color catcher sheets, naturally dyed. And of course we've got my DVD and a small art quilt made specifically for the DVD workshop and featured on the cover.
So, hop on over to Virginia's website and see all the totes she's got there and do your part to contribute to a worthy cause!

Tote Tuesday!

Opens today!! Virginia Spiegel's generous spirit prevails once again! Hop on over to her blog today and check out the SIX(!) totes available today at 11AM.
Are you ready to help us meet our goal of raising $5000 for the American Cancer Society?
Here's a preview and all the info on how it works.

Tote Tuesday!

Virginia Spiegel has done it again! Yes she did say she was retiring from fund-raising, heh! Not so fast.. she is at it again and of course for a worthy cause - the American Cancer Society. Here's the scoop ~>

ToteTuesday, a Fiberart For A Cause fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will open Tuesday, February 2 and continue through March.

ToteTuesday will feature themed totes filled with unique, beautiful, and inspiring items from the worlds of art quilting, fiber arts, knitting, beading, mixed media and surface design.

You can expect totes offering original artwork, autographed books, hand-dyed fabrics, gorgeous yarns, beads, handmade journals, fun and useful materials/tools for mixed-media and surface design, online classes, DVDs, and much, much more.

A list of the more than 20 themed totes now in progress is here.

100% of the proceeds will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause. Fiberart For A Cause has already donated over $190,000 to the ACS.

Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 2 and be prepared to be amazed!

And I am participating too! My tote will have in it my new Cloth Paper Scissors Workshop DVD and a selection of goodies from my own personal recyclables stash! Some dryer sheets, painted and not, plastic bags, fun netting, colorful scraps and a few surprises. Just the right amount of stuff to get your creative juices flowing on a new work of art!

Meanwhile check out this fun interview Virginia just did with Pokey Bolton for Quilting Arts.
PS: the Tote Tuesday logo is by Jeanelle McCall.

fiber art for a cause

I am greatly honored to be asked to contribute art to Virginia Spiegel's FiberArt For A Cause fundraiser. It is a fabulous Invitational Reverse Auction of Fabulous Fiberart! How's that for a mouthful?
Seriously it is wonderful selfless fundraiser that Virginia and her sister dedicate themselves to, and all for an excellent cause - American Cancer Society. Many wonderful artists are donating art to this cause and 100% of the monies goes directly to ACS. The auction will take place in March 2009 and I promise to give you all the details once I have them. The contributing artists are:
Gerrie Congon
Marjorie DeQuincy
Rayna Gillman
Carol Larson
Linda Teddlie Minton
Susie Monday
Judy Coates Perez
Leandra Spangler
Roxane Stoner
and Me!

Meanwhile, all you artists out there do consider another fundraiser that Virginia is doing - Collage Mania. Artists are invited to donate a collage that will be auctioned off in May. A wonderful opportunity to donate and/or purchase some affordable artwork and contribute to a worthy cause. That is what the three collages in this post are all about. They are Питерские Окна/Piterskie Okna/St. Pete Windows 7, 8 and 9. Dryer sheets printed with images of windows that I took in St. Petersburg, Russia this summer, layered on hand painted cotton and mustard colored wool, free-hand machine embroidered, painted with oil sticks and hand stitched. Each measuring 9 1/2" x 6 3/4" mounted on 10"x8" mat board, and ready for framing.

two for one journals

Due to various life stuff I did not complete my journal from last week on time. But I have managed to catch up and now I have two journals to share 18{52}08 (above) and 19{52}08 (below). I made both of them using the same dye catcher sheet that was colored a bluish purple and a lime green embroidery thread. #19 also used a plastic orange shopping bag. They are just very simply hand stitched. It was a nice quiet meditative diversion to make these one after another among life's hustle and bustle last week... I am also happy to report that Collage Mania II and Fiberart For A Cause have raised over $13,000 for the American Cancer Society earlier in the week. And all three of my collages have been acquired and as of this morning are on their way to their new owners. Hope they will be enjoyed... and I am looking forward to receiving the collage that I have acquired soon too... fun, fun, fun... and now on to other fun of the day - my girls combined birthday parties in about an hour... I am sure to be exhausted this evening.. Good weekend to all!

collage mania continues

Today is the last day of Collage Mania! Go check it out, all remaining collages can be had for a minimum donation of $40 to the American Cancer Society. Yesterday Virginia gathered $8,000 in donations, can't wait to see what happens today! There are still quite a few collages left, including one of mine (the one below). I was quite lucky to get one of Cynthia St. Charles's collages entitled "Today", can't wait to get my hands on it!
Go shop/donate!

Of course I just happen to be one of the artists who donated, so here a mini preview of one of my collages.. This is Chugunnoie Kruzhevo/Cast Iron Lace 2, and you can read about my inspiration here or in the current issue of Cloth Paper Scizzors.

collage mania II

This was going to be an Easter food post, but something exciting happened and we interrupt regularly scheduled programming... I received the latest Cloth, Paper, Scissors issue today and during a break from the cooking marathon I sat down to peruse it. Well I jumped out of my comfy chair just a few minutes later! a FOUR page spread about Virginia Spiegel's Collage Mania II for Fiberart For a Cause.. I could not believe my eyes! I had completely forgotten about sending a collage to the editors a month ago. It's a wonderful preview with six artists works shown (yes, I am one) and little essays about what inspired each artist. Go get your copy today! Better yet on May 5th and 6th get a collage for yourself by donating to the American Cancer Society.

More than 100 artists worldwide have donated 235 fiber collages to benefit the American Cancer Society. Collage Mania II will be held May 5th and 6th with preview of all collages beginning April 28th. Check out Virginia's website for more details. 100% of the proceeds are donated directly to the ACS through Fiberart For a Cause. Virginia's amazing generosity has resulted in more than $150,000 towards cancer research and education in the past three years.

collages for FFAC

I am honored that Virginia Spiegel has chosen my collages to be part of Collage Mania II. She is doing the most incredible job raising money for ACS. Virginia works so hard for the right cause and has the biggest heart...

Scraps of silk, cotton and synthetic fabrics, dryer sheets; free-hand machine embroidered, hand stitched, 9.5"x7.5".

work in progress

I am finally getting some art done around here. Christmas stuff is nearly all put away, kitchen mostly cleaned up, the girls have been playing together without any major skirmishes and I sneaked into my studio and actually got started on some things. I have been looking at the collages that have already been done by various artists for Collage Mania II at FiberArt For A Cause, and my hands started itching to work on my promised collages. And I want to get my hands on one of Virginia's ATCs too, I am selfish..

So after some floundering and eating chocolate, I picked out some inspiring images, threw some scraps on the table and started putting things together... These are pictures I took of ironwork on various monuments in Moscow this summer. This is only the beginning of course, these will change drastically by the time I am done here. I layered fabric scraps for a color base and today during naptime I intend to start the free-hand machine embroidery, followed by hand stitching.

art, nature, creativity, life

Virginia Spiegel's eBook will be released on Monday, October 8th (that's tomorrow) with all proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause. "Art, Nature, Creativity, Life" is an expanded version of the best of her e-newsletters. There are 19 chapters stuffed with essays, art, photos, annotated book recommendations, and poetry. Virginia's goal is to raise $30,000 to join the more than $130,000 she has already raised for the ACS.

Here's one of the postcards that I had fun making previously for Virginia's fundraiser. She is quite an amazing woman!
